CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team split a pair of game on Saturday at the Battle at the Beach, falling to Louisville 6-2 and defeating Bowling Green 11-3 in five innings at St. John Stadium.
In game one, the Chanticleers fell behind 6-0 to Louisville before Indya Smith put Coastal on the board with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh. However, Smith was stranded to end Coastal's comeback effort.
Nicolette Picone took the loss for the Chants, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing six runs with three strikeouts and one walk.
In the Chanticleers' second game of the day, Coastal trailed 1-0 before loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third. Iyanla De Jesus promptly gave CCU the lead with a three-run double to make the score 3-1. However, Bowling Green answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth to pull even.
The tie would not last long, as the Chants loaded the bases again with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. This time, Riley Zana supplied the fireworks as she blasted a grand slam over the right field wall to make the score 7-1.
The Chanticleers kept the pressure on, loading the bases again before a single and a throwing error brought home three more runs to make the score 10-3. Livi Payne wrapped up the eight-run inning with an RBI single as the Chants took a commanding 11-3 lead. Coastal kept the Falcons off the board the rest of the way, ending the game in five innings.
Picone earned the win in relief, pitching 1.2 innings without allowing a base runner.
The Chants are scheduled to face Furman on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
