Chants Outscore Huskies 9-1 on Final Day of the Beach Chicken Brawl

Roose hit her first home run of the season

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (23-3) cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Houston Christian Huskies on the final day of the Beach Chicken Brawl tournament on Sunday.

The Chanticleers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when freshman Delaney Keith crushed a double to left-center field to drive in Diamond Williams from second base and put the Chants up 1-0.

Sophomore Keirstin Roose then stepped up to the plate and smashed her first home run of the season over the right-field wall to score three runs and extend Coastal's lead to 4-0 at the end of the first inning.

Mady Volpe was ruthless in the circle, pitching back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the second and third innings to preserve Coastal's lead at 4-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Chants powered ahead when Iyanla De Jesus blasted a two-run home run over the center-field wall to push CCU out in front 6-0. On the next at-bat, Roose drilled a double down the left-field line and managed to reach third base on a throwing error by the Huskies' shortstop. The Chants capitalized on this miscue when Livi Payne struck a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Roose and make the score 7-0.

The Chanticleers hammered their third home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Riley Zana sent one soaring over the left-center field wall to drive in Indya Smith from second base to put CCU up 9-0.

The only saving grace for the Huskies came in the top of the fifth inning when Autumn Sydlik hit a lead-off home run down the left-field line.

CCU senior Raelee Brabham shook it off and struck out the next three hitters to give CCU the 9-1 victory.

Volpe (7-0) tallied her seventh win of the season, recording three strikeouts and denying the Huskies a single run in 4.0 innings of work in the circle.

Due to inclement weather, CCU's second game versus Ohio State was canceled.

The Chanticleers will be back at St. John Stadium on Tuesday, when they will face North Carolina at 6 p.m. ET.
