Smith Walks Off Ohio State to Clinch 6-4 Win

Coastal Softball is on a five-game win streak

Box Score CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina softball team improved to 20-3 on the season when Indya Smith crushed a two-run walk-off home run to defeat Ohio State 6-4 at St. John Stadium on Friday night.

Senior Raelee Brabham opened the game in top form recording four consecutive 1-2-3 innings to keep the score at 0-0 after three and a half innings of play.

The Chanticleers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning when Iyanla De Jesus crushed a double off the right-field wall to get in scoring position. This was followed by an error from the Buckeyes' first baseman which allowed Livi Payne to reach first base and pinch runner Payton Ebersole to advance to third putting Ohio State in a tough spot with just one out.

Graduate student Abbey Montoya then stepped up the plate and hammered an RBI double to right field to give CCU a 1-0 lead with two outs still left to play with. Coastal extended its lead to 2-0, as Payne was able to reach home on an RBI groundout by Smith for her first RBI of the night.

Ohio State answered right back in the top of the fifth inning with a lead-off single and a bunt to put runners on first and third base. Mariah Rodriguez then knotted the score at 2-2 after she slotted a triple down the right-field line driving in two RBIs. Farley added insult to injury when she hit an RBI single to center field to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead.

The Chanticleers battled back in the bottom of the fifth inning after singles from Diamond Williams and Delaney Keith and a walk loaded the bases, but the Chants were stopped in their tracks and left the bases loaded after a fly and groundout ended the inning.

The Buckeyes pushed their lead out to 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning when Meggie Otte singled to center field to drive in Kami Kortokrax.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Chants were hungry for a comeback when a single, walk, and fielding error filled the bases for the second time in the game. Junior Riley Zana seized the opportunity when she smashed an RBI double to right-center to tie the score at 4-4 with one inning left to play.

The Chanticleers' defense held strong and stranded a Buckeye in the top of the seventh inning.

Payne kicked off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle to give the Chants a shot at a walk-off victory. This came into fruition when Smith launched a missle over the right field wall for a two-run blast to give Coastal the 6-4 walk-off win.

Sophomore Mady Volpe tallied her sixth win of the season, pitching 2.0 shutout innings while recording three strikeouts.

The Chanticleers will be back in action tomorrow where they will face Houston Christian at 3 p.m. ET and Canisius at 5:30 p.m. ET.
