CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (4-0) tallied two more wins in its second doubleheader versus UMass Lowell on Friday at St. John Stadium.
CCU went 4-0 on the weekend, scoring a total of 26 runs and recording three home runs, six doubles, and 25 RBIs.
Game 1: Coastal 9, UMass Lowell 2
The Chanticleers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after sophomore
Keirstin Roose doubled to right-center field and advanced to third on an error to drive in three RBIs and put the home team on top early at 3-0.
Senior
Diamond Williams then stepped up to the plate, where she singled to center field to drive in Roose from third base to make the score 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Chanticleers added to their lead, as the home team had two runners on base after the first two at-bats prompting the River Hawks to switch out their starting pitcher.
The pitching change did not have an impact on sophomore
Maddy Jennings, as she blasted a home run to center field to drive in
Riley Zana and
Delaney Keith to extend Coastal's lead to 7-0.
UMass Lowell earned its first two runs of the day in the top on the fourth as singles from Elizabeth Fredrick and Cayla Tulley each drove in one RBI to put the score at 7-2.
In the top of the sixth, with the bases loaded
Mady Volpe came in clutch in the circle for the Chants, as she struck out Brenda Davenport to dismiss the River Hawks' scoring opportunity.
In the bottom of the sixth, an error by second baseman Mya Case left Keith and
Abbey Montoya on base with two outs on the board. Senior
Iyanla De Jesus then stepped up to the plate to hit her first double of the season to drive in two RBIs and give Coastal a 9-2 win.
Sophomore
Nicolette Picone (1-0) picked up her first win on the season, recording four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Stand-out offensive performances came from Jennings (2-for-2, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Roose (2-for-3, 3 RBIs, run), De Jesus (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), and Keith (1-for-4, 2 runs).
Game 2: Coastal 1, UMass Lowell 0
CCU's only run came in the bottom of the second when Jennings hammered her second home run of the day over the left-center field wall to give Coastal a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Raelee Brabham pitched her way out of trouble in the top of the sixth, striking out Cayla Tulley with the tying and go-ahead runs on base for the Rivers Hawks to help Coastal secure the 1-0 victory.
It was a pitching masterclass by Brabham (2-0), who recorded her second win of the season by throwing a complete game. Brabham registered a career-high 11 strikeouts and did not give up a single run in her 7.0 innings of work.
The Chanticleers will return to action next weekend as they host the Battle at the Beach at St. John Stadium (Feb, 17-19). Colgate, Drexel, and East Carolina will be making appearances at the three-day tournament.
