XXX Olympiad Women's Hammer Qualifying Round Results

LONDON - Coastal Carolina University track and field alumnus Amber Campbellretained her title as the top U.S. women's hammer athlete; however, that was not enough to advance to the medal round of the women's hammer at the XXX Olympiad in London on Wednesday.

Campbell, a 2004 graduate of Coast Carolina, needed to finish in the top 12 after the qualifying round and she just missed the cut by a mere 21 inches, coming in 13th with a final distance of 69.93m (229-05).

The top U.S. qualifier entering the Games, Campbell finished sixth in Group A despite fouling on her first attempt before posting her best effort of the day on her second throw. She then had to wait for the 19 competitors in Group B to throw before she learned her fate.

Campbell was moved down the standings to 12th after the Group B's first attempts. She remained in 12th through Group B's second attempts and looked as though she advance through with four throwers left to complete their final attempts. However, it was not to be as Belarus' Aksana Miankova unleashed a throw of 73.10m (239-10) to knock Campbell out of the medal round.

Campbell placed 21st in the hammer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing -- her first Olympics.
