Coastal Carolina Clear Bag Policy

CONWAY - In order to expedite entry and provide a safe and secure environment for our fans, student-athletes, staff and officials, Coastal Carolina University Athletics will be implementing a Clear Bag Policy for all ticketed events effective August 2017. Along with numerous institutions around the country, the state of South Carolina and professional sports around the world, this new policy will limit the size and style of bags carried into ticketed venues.

"We are continually working to improve the game day experience for our fans, as well as provide the safest possible atmosphere in which to enjoy those games," said Director of Athletics Matt Hogue. "We believe that the new Clear Bag Policy is an effective way to both ensure the safety of all involved, and expedite fans' entrance into our facilities. Many colleges, universities and professional leagues have implemented similar policies to great effect, and Coastal Carolina will follow suit as we continue to expand and enhance our athletic programs."

This policy follows recommendations set forth by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) Best Practices Guide.

For the 2017 season, event staff will have locations set up at the shuttle stops located on Hwy. 501 and Hwy. 544 with Ziploc bags for those fans that do not have clear bags available. There will also be a location by the victory bell between Brooks Stadium and Springs Brooks Stadium. Personal belongings may not be left at these locations. Personal belongings must be returned to your vehicles and Coastal Carolina University is not responsible for any items left at any of these locations. These locations will open 3 hours prior to kickoff and will remain open until the end of the first quarter.

Why is Coastal Carolina University adopting this policy for all ticketed events?
The safety and security of our fans and student-athletes, along with the overall fan experience is our number one priority. This proactive measure will enhance the safety inside and out of the stadium and speed up the screening process. This policy also supports Homeland Security's "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign.

What happens if I arrive to the game and do not have a clear bag?
For the 2017 Football season, due to implementation of new policy, fans that do not have a clear bag will have several opportunities to receive a free clear gallon-sized bag. If you are parking on campus, each lot attendant will be supplied with clear gallon-size bags for you to use. If you are taking a shuttle, bags will be available at the shuttle pick up locations on Hwy. 501 and Hwy. 544. There will also be a location by the victory bell between Brooks Stadium and Springs Brooks Stadium. Be sure to leave your non-clear bag in your vehicle.

What happens if I show up at the gate with a bag that is not permitted?
Fans with a prohibited bag will not be permitted inside the venue. Fans with prohibited bags will need to return their bags to their vehicle, and transfer their belongings to an approved clear plastic bag before entering the athletic venue.

How does this expedite my entry into the venue?
This policy enables us to move guests through our security checkpoints faster, allowing staff to be more efficient and effective in checking bags that are brought into the venue. In short, shorter lines mean fewer hassles, all while guests enjoy an improved sense of safety.

Are other Universities/Venues limiting bags?
Yes. More and more college institutions are adopting the NFL's Clear Bag Policy. In fact, some like the University of Michigan and Michigan State University have taken more far-reaching measures and do not permit any type of bags.

How many bags can each person bring into the venue?
Each ticketed guest can carry one large clear bag -- either a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag or the 12" x 6" x 12" clear bag -- plus a small clutch purse (4.5" x 6.5"). The small clutch must be carried into the venue outside the clear bag and is subject to search.

What about diaper bags?
Diapers and non-medically necessary items for babies and young children must be carried in a clear bag. Each member of a family, including children, would be allowed to carry an approved clear bag and a clutch purse into the stadium.

Can I carry cameras, binoculars, phones, or tablets separately from what I put in a clear bag?
Yes. Fans can continue to carry permitted items in their pockets and/or hands such as keys, phones, wallets, makeup, etc. if you choose not to put them in a clear bag or clutch. Prohibited items have not changed. Camera and binocular cases will not be allowed.

Are clear backpacks permitted?
Yes. Clear backpacks that do not exceed the 12" X 6" X 12" clear bag policy are permitted. Any type of clear bag that does not exceed the clear bag size and do not contact the one logo imprint (4.5" tall X 3.4" wide size maximum) is permitted.

What about bringing blankets in cold weather?
Fans will be able to bring blankets by tossing them over a shoulder or arm as they arrive the gate. These items can be screened easily.

Will this policy affect the ability of fans to tailgate?
Are there limitations on tailgating items? No glass bottles or charcoal grills are permitted but fans will be able to enjoy tailgating activities as usual and can do so with greater safety and knowledge that entry into the stadium will be smoother and faster.
