Born Walks Off James Madison in 13th Inning

Coastal rallies four times to beat Dukes

CONWAY, S.C. – Chad Born's double to left-center in the bottom of the 13th inning cleared the bases and propelled the No. 16 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers to an 11-10 win over the James Madison Dukes, to clinch the Sun Belt Conference series opener in a Sunday afternoon matchup in Conway at Springs Brooks Stadium. With the win, the Chants improve to 17-3 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Dukes drop to 13-7 on the year and 1-2 in the SBC.
 
The Chants' Sam Antonacci (3-for-6, 2B, 2 R, RBI) singled to right to lead off the home half of the final frame and moved to second on a walk by Blake Barthol (1-for-4, 2 BB, 3 R). Both runners advanced to on Graham Brown's sacrifice bunt. Barthol was nearly doubled up at second on Caden Bodine's lineout to second base before Zack Beach (1-for-4, HR, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBIs) was intentionally walked to set the table for Born.
 
With the Chants down two at 10-8 in the bottom of the 13th inning, Coastal's Born (1-for-1, 2B, 3 RBIs) stepped to the plate for his only appearance with the bases juiced and belted a bases-clearing double to left center field to walk off the Dukes and clinch the series win 11-10. Born's heroics marked the fourth time in the game that CCU had to come from behind to tie or take the lead.
 
James Madison took the lead in the top of the third as Jacob Steinberg (2-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBIs) pulled a 3-2 pitch to left field off CCU starter Henry Weycker. The Dukes' Jason Schiavone singled to center and advanced on a hit by a pitch. Fenwick Trimble grounded out to second to score Schiavone to give JMU a 2-0 lead.
 
Coastal answered with a run to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 after Corey Zientek (3-for-6, 2 R) singled up the middle before getting into scoring position by stealing second. Antonacci followed with a single to center field to score Zientek from second.
 
In the fourth inning, the Dukes made it 3-1 as Coleman Calabrese drove a one-out 3-1 pitch over the center field wall. The Chanticleers responded with back-to-back home runs by Beach and Sebastian Alexander to tie the game up at 3-3.
 
James Madison took a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth when Ryan Dunaway homered to left which Calabrese followed with a double and scored on a Steinberg single to center. In the top of the eighth, JMU's Schiavone singled through the left side to score Brendan O'Donnell to make the score 6-3.
 
Coastal tied it up in the bottom of the ninth after Zienteck singled, Ty Barrango doubled to left center, and a hit by a pitch by Barthol. Derek Bender hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Zientek and advance Barrango to third. A wild pitch allowed Barthol to get into scoring position before Bodine smacked a single to center to plate both Barrango and Barthol to even the score at 6-6.
 
After a scoreless 10th, the Dukes' Schiavone belted a two-run homer to give JMU an 8-6 lead before CCU's Parker Cassell got the final three outs of the inning to lead 8-6. The Chanticleers answered again as Antonacci doubled to left before Barthol reached via a four-pitch base on balls and Bender loaded the bases with a single through the left side. A hit by a pitch by Bodine scored Antonacci before Beach tied it up at 8-8.
 
James Madison capitalized on a double by Kyle Langley to lead off the top of the 13th inning as Peifer singled down the left field line to score Langley and put Schiavone in scoring position. Ryan Dooley hit a sacrifice fly to score Peifer, who advanced to third on a fly out to left, to give the Dukes a 10-8 lead and set the table for the walk-off for the Chants.
 
Coastal's Hayden Johnson (1-0) tossed 1.0 inning, allowing no runs on one hit. Cassell threw 2.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. CCU starter Weycker did not factor in the decision went 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
 
JMU's Ryan Murphy (1-2) worked 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks. The Dukes starter Todd Mozoki pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
 
Coastal Carolina will travel to Raleigh, N.C., for a midweek matchup with North Carolina State on Tuesday, March 19, at Doak Field at Dail Park with a 6 p.m. ET scheduled first pitch. The game will be streamed on ACCNX.
