Viellehner Heads To NCAA Cross Country Championship
CONWAY, S.C.- Coastal Carolina freshman Julia Viellehner (Winhoring, Germany/Maria Ward Gymnasium) heads to Terre Haute, Ind. on Monday, November 20 to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Viellehner qualified for National's with her eighth place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet on November 11. She crossed the finish line with a time of 20:40, which also earned her a spot on the All-Southeast Region Team.
The last time Viellehner competed in Terre Haute she defeated several All-Americans in the Pre-National meet with her strong finish of 18th out of 241 runners. Viellehner has been named Big South Runner of the Week three times in the 2006 season. She was the Big South Champion with a time of 17:30 which earned her Rookie of Year and Runner of the Year from the conference.
As a team, the Lady Chanticleers ended their season 10th in the Southeast Region and second at the Big South Championships. Viellehner is the lone representative from Coastal Carolina and the only female competitor from the Big South to compete in the NCAA Championship this year and only the sixth Lady Chanticleer to qualify since 1996.
"Julia has had a remarkable freshman season," Head Coach Alan Connie commented. "She has trained very hard and prepared herself in every way to be successful at a national level. We are all very proud of all her accomplishments and records and are excited about her representing Coastal Carolina University at the NCAA National Championships."
The women's 6k meet will start at 12 p.m. on Monday with the men racing their 10k at 1:15 p.m. The award ceremony will begin following the conclusion of the men's race. The top 25 individuals will be recognized with the top 15 receiving an award.
