Southeast Regional Meet Central
CONWAY- The Coastal Carolina women’s cross country team will travel to Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Nov. 13 to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional meet held at EP Tom Sawyer Park. The starting gun on the 6k race will fire at 10 a.m.
This year marks the fourth time in a five year span that the Southeast Regional has been held at the home course of the University of Louisville. The top two teams in the meet will automatically advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. where they will join the top teams from the other nine regional meets as well as the 13 at-large teams selected to compete by the NCAA.
The Chanticleers enter Saturday with a rich history of success at the regional meets. Coastal’s highest team finish at a regional was in 1996 as the team finished third in a 77 team field. In the past 13 years Coastal has had 13 All-Southeast Regional selections and seven top ten finishers. During that span the Chants have had seven individual qualifiers for the NCAA Cross Country Championship, with two of those qualifiers- Julia Viellehner, who was 11th at the national meet in 2006 and Diana Jepchirchir, who was 29th in 2007- going on to earn All-American honors. Angela Murphy (1996), Jolene Williams (1997), and Jepchirchir (2007) share the honor of the highest individual finish of fifth at the Southeast Regional in Chanticleer history.
This year’s 39 team Regional field features the four nationally ranked teams of Virginia (12), Duke (17), North Carolina (21), and N.C. State (29).
The Chants came home with a strong finish their last time out at as the team earned a runner-up finish at the Big South Championship on Oct. 30. Coastal was led in the meet by a trio of All-Big South Conference performers in Emily Marchini, Jamie Brusa, and Christian Johnson. Marchini led the Chants across the finish line in 5k meet as she finished seventh overall with a time of 18:31.88. Right on Marchini’s heels was Brusa finishing eighth in 18:32.71 and Johnson in tenth turning in a time of 18:38.55.
Big South All-Academic team member Janel Reeves finished the meet in 11th with a time of 18:41.92. Seanna Kautz rounded out the scorers for Coastal in the meet as she finished the course in 19:22.59 to place 29th in the 76 competitor field.
“As a team, we are very excited about competing in the regional meet,” said head coach Alan Connie. “We are looking forward to closing out the season in a strong fashion in one of the deepest regional fields in years.”
In Coastal’s lone 6k meet of the season, the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational, Brusa turned in an impressive time of 22:51.9 on the difficult course to lead the Chanticleers.
