Women's Cross Country Makes a Run at 13th Big South Title on Saturday
Oct. 28, 2011
CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina University men's and women's cross country teams will host the 2011 Big South Championships presented by UCS and Musco Lighting on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Quail Creek Golf Club course. The men's 8-kilometer race will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the women's 5-kilometer race will follow at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday marks the first time since 2003 that Coastal has had the privilege of hosting the Championships.
Under the direction of 12 time Big South coach of the year Alan Connie, the 2011 women's squad is in search of the program's 13th Big South crown and first since the 2008 campaign. Moreover, Coastal has placed in the top three at each championship since the 1988 season - a streak that spans 23 seasons.
Last season, Coastal finished second behind Liberty who claimed their fourth championship since 2006.
Emily Marchini and Christian Johnson, both All-Big South Conference performers a year ago, have paced the Chanticleers this season as each has posted a pair of top 10 finishes. Marchini won the season opening Gamecock Open to earn Big South Runner of the Week honors. Johnson has led Coastal across the finish line in the past two events as she completed the 6K Paul Short Run in 22:49 followed by an 18:59 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open.
Janel Reeves, a Big South All-Academic team selection in 2010, has been the third Chanticleer scorer in three meets. Jessica Dennison, Shelby Nicosia, Seanna Kautz and Stephanie Taylor have also fared well for the Chants this season as each has finished in the top half of the field in each event this season. Additionally, all five Coastal scorers finished within a mere 38 seconds of one another at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open.
