Women's Cross Country Heads to Big South Championships

Big South Championships The Chanticleers will next participate in the Big South Championships on Sat., Nov. 1 in Lynchburg, Va. This is the second time the Chants have ran in Lynchburg this season, as the Liberty Flames hosted the Big South Preview, an event that Coastal Carolina won.

Chants Place 3rd at Blue Ridge Open
The Chants finished third out of 26 participating teams behind Clemson and the surprising High Point Panthers in the 5k race. Once again, Mia Wyszynski paced the Chants and finished 8th with a time of 18:45.

Chants, For Three!
Coastal Carolina will be looking for its third team win of the season, as the Chants ran away with team titles in the Coastal Carolina Invite (Sept. 13) and the Big South Preview (Sept. 20).

Member of Coaching Staff Wins Blue Ridge Open
Former Olympian Zola (Budd) Pieterse won the Blue Ridge Open, competing unattached. The 43-year old turned in a time of 17:58 as she is in training for the Nov. 1 New York Marathon.

Coming Back For More The Chants return two top-10 finishers from a year ago, in sophomore Maranie Staab (9th) and junior Theresa Schamberger (10th). The top-10 finish earned each runner All-Big South honors, a distinction each will seek to replicate this weekend.
Returning Experience Along with Staab and Schamberger, the Chants return four runners with experience from last year in Shelby Donahue (25th), Keli-Jo White (40th), Joyce Curtin (49th), and Peggy Busbee (52nd).

USTFCCCA Showing the Chants Some Love
The Chants are currently ranked No. 14 in the Southeast Regional Poll by the USTFCCCA. High Point is the other school representing the Big South, with the Panthers being ranked a spot head of the Chants at No. 13.

Chants Second in Preseason Poll
Coastal Carolina garnered 93 points and three-first place votes to place second in the annual Big South Conference Preseason Poll for the second consecutive year. Defending champion Liberty took the top spot with 97 points and seven first-place votes.

Looking Ahead
Coastal Carolina will next be in action at the Southeast Regional Championships on Nov. 15 in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 11 a.m., hosted by Wake Forest University. The number of Chants participating will depend on individual performances in this weekend’s championship.

Coastal Carolina Big South Championships History:
-Liberty has won the last two Big South team titles. Prior to that streak, the Chants won the team championship from 2001-2005.
-Overall, the Chanticleers have 11 team championships, the most in conference history. Liberty ranks second with five overall team titles.
-The Chants have won three-straight individual titles, and 14 of the last 20. Diana Jepchirchir won in 2007, while Julia Viellehner and Anne Marie Moutsinga won in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Overall, Coastal Carolina boasts 14 individual championships, the most in Big South history.
-Coastal Carolina has had a runner win nine of the last 14 Freshman of the Year awards, with the most recent coming in 2006 as Julia Viellehner earned the distinction. Prior to 2007, Coastal Carolina had won five consecutive Freshman of the Year honors.
-Already the owner of 11 Big South Coach of the Year honors, Head Coach Alan Connie will be searching for his 12th this Saturday.
-Coastal Carolina has the only two All-Americans in Big South history, with Julia Viellehner earned the honor in 2006, and Diana Jepchirchir attained the status in the 2007 season
-Overall, Coastal Carolina has had 17 All-Region Runners, by far the most in Big South history. Anne Marie Moutsinga, Catherine Conder, and Jolene Williams earned the All-Region honors three-times in their Chanticleer career.
-Coastal Carolina has six of the seven four-time Big South honorees in Big South history.
