CHARLESTON, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina Women's Cross Country team lost a tough race to rival Liberty to get second place at The New Balance Men's and Women's Big South Cross Country Championship Presented by UCS at Charleston Southern Saturday. Liberty picked up the Champion title with a team score of 29 and placed all five runners in the top ten. Coastal had a team score of 34.
Freshman Julia Viellehner (Winhoring, Germany/Maria Ward Gymnasium) was the Big South Champion with a time of 17:30 which earned her Rookie of Year and Runner of the Year for the 2006 season. Diana Jepchirchir (Kampala, Uganda/University of New Orleans) was the next Lady Chanticleer to cross the finish line with a time of 17:53, giving her second place. Felicitas Mensing (Neuhausen, Germany/Leplergy Secondary School) finished fourth with a time of 18:04. Aubrey Bergquist ((Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) finished 13th with a time of 18:44 and was followed by Claudia Witte (Warlin, Germany/Sportgymnasium Neubrandenburg) placed 14th with a time of 18:45. Crossing the finish line at 18th with a time of 18:56 was freshman Theresa Schamberger (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble). Danielle Hagler (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) was the last Lady Chanticleer to cross the finish line in 35th place with a time of 19:54.
The Lady Chanticleers had three runners earn a spot on the 2006 Big South All-Conference Team: Viellehner, Jepchirchir and Mensing. Mensing also earned 2006 Big South All-Academic Team honors with her 4.0 in applied mathematics.
Five of the seven Lady Chanticleer runners finished the day with a personal best. Next up for the Lady Chanticleers is the NCAA Regional Championships in Louisville, KY on November 11.
