Women's Cross Country Looks to Reclaim Conference Title Saturday
Week 5 Notes:
Jepchirchir Garners Second Runner of the Week Honor
Senior Diana Jepchirchir picked up her second Choice Hotels Big South Runner of the Week honor on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Jepchirchir paced the Lady Chanticleers by running a Big South 6K record 20:24.6 in the Blue Race at Pre-Nationals and placing sixth, the highest a Big South athlete has finished at Pre-Nationals.
Running With One Shoe?
At the beginning of the Pre-Nationals’ Blue Race, senior Diana Jepchirchir lost her left spike when someone stepped on the back of her shoe. Ironically enough, the same thing happened at the same course to Julia Viellehner at last year’s NCAA Championships.
The championship season starts this Saturday when the Lady Chants compete at the Big South Cross Country Championships. After finishing second at last year’s championships, Coastal will look to reclaim its crown and earn its sixth Big South Championship in seven years.
Time and Experience Will Tell
Under head coach Alan Connie’s tutelage, Coastal has won the Big South Conference Championship 11 times and nine Lady Chants have claimed the individual crown 13 times. Of those nine, Catherine Conder, Jolene Williams and Anne Marie Moutsinga are the only Coastal runners to claim multiple individual titles with each winning three.
Head coach Alan Connie has entered seniors Aubrey Bergquist, Nikki Jasperson and Diana Jepchirchir, juniors Felicitas Mensing and Keli-Jo White, sophomores Peggy Busbee and Theresa Schamberger, redshirt freshman Maranie Staab and freshmen Joyce Curtin and Shelby Donahue into the 2007 Big South Championship Meet.
This weekend’s race will be the final 5K for Coastal this season. Coastal has already competed in three 5K races this season. Here is a look at the top 5K finishers at each race:
Name Time Meet
Diana Jepchirchir 18:16 CCU Invitational (Sept. 14)
Felicitas Mensing 18:21 Covered Bridge Open (Sept. 31)
Shelby Donahue 19:38 Low Country Invite "B" (Oct. 13)
