BOONE, N.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University women's cross country team placed third this afternoon, Fri. Oct. 17 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open hosted by Appalachian State University.
Clemson won the event with 74 team points, while High Point was the surprise runner-up with 87 points. Coastal Carolina had 111, while host Appalachian State had 127. Davidson rounded out the top five teams with 135 points in the event that had 194 total runners.
Redshirt freshman Mia Wyszynski (Berlin, Germany/University of Bremen) was the top finisher for the Chanticleers, placing eighth at the collegiate level with a time of 18:45. Redshirt sophomore Maranie Staab (Trafford, Pa./Penn Trafford) was Coastal Carolina's second finisher in 13th place with a time of 18:53.
Also participating in the event was the newest member of the Coastal Carolina track & field team, volunteer coach and former Olympian Zola (Budd) Pieterse. The 43-year old was the top overall finisher with a time of 17:53.
"This was a tough race and we worked very hard to keep such a strong gap of 53 seconds between our top finisher and sxith-place finisher," Head Coach Alan Connie said of the meet. "This meet really sets up what will be an exciting conference championship meet in two weeks."
The Chanticleers take the next week off as they prepare for the 2008 Big South Conference Cross Country Championships, being held Sat., Nov. 11 in Lynchburg, Va. The race, hosted by Liberty University, will start at 11:30 p.m.
