Women's Cross Country 12th, Jepchirchir 11th overall at Brooks Paul Short Run
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Coastal Carolina's women's cross country team finished 12th out of 47 teams at the prestigious Brooks Paul Short Run at Lehigh University. The Lady Chanticleers garnered 429 points in the Women's Brown Championship race, which featured 12 nationally ranked team from Divisions I, II and III. No. 13 Princeton won the team championship for the second consecutive year.
Senior Diana Jepchirchir (Kampala, Uganda/University of New Orleans) led the way for the Lady Chanticleers, covering the 6K course in a time of 20:57 and finishing 11th out of 317 runners. Jepchirchir becomes just the third runner program history to run sub-21:00 in a 6K. She joins the elite ranks of former NCAA Cross Country Championship participants Anne Marie Moutsinga and Julia Viellehner as having sub-21:00 6K races.
Junior Felicitas Mensing (Neuhausen, Germany/Leplergy Secondary) and sophomore Theresa Schamberger (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) also placed in the top 75. Mensing was 53rd with a time of 21:50. Schamberger was 75th with a time of 22:13, which was a 1:11 improvement from her time at last year's Brooks Paul Short Run.
Redshirt-freshman Maranie Staab (Trafford, Pa./Penn Trafford) ran a new personal record in the 6K with a time of 22:47 and finished 122nd. Senior Aubrey Bergquist (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) was the fifth Lady Chant to cross the finish line, placing 168th in a time of 23:20. Rounding out the Lady Chants were freshmen Joyce Curtin (Killeagh, Ireland/Colaiste Eoin) and Shelby Donahue (Griswold, Conn./Griswold). Curtin was 234th with a time of 24:07, while Donahue finished 255th in a time of 24:34.
The Lady Chants also competed in the College Women JV race. Junior Keli Jo White (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) finished 89th with a 23:59 mark. Senior Nikki Jasperson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) clocked in at 24:10 for 107th, while sophomore Peggy Busbee (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken) placed 242nd in 25:55.
Coastal Carolina returns to action in two weeks when the team participates in two meets Oct. 13. The Lady Chants will send runners to the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. for a 12:20 race. Meanwhile, Coastal will also participate in the Low Country Invitational in Johns Island, S.C.
