CONWAY, S.C- Coastal Carolina women’s cross country will compete in the 25th Annual Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday, Sept, 25. Jack Johnson Women’s Gold (Division I) Competition, which will start at 1:10 p.m. (CT), will feature eight of the top 30 nationally ranked teams. The top ranked of these teams is Duke, who is currently ranked seventh in the country according to the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.
This will be the Coastal’s first race at the 6-kilometer distance on the season, with the Gamecock Open and Coastal Carolina Invitational being of the 5-kilometer variety.
Through two races this season, the Chants have been lead by both an experienced graduate student in Jamie Brusa and a true freshman in Seanna Kautz. Brusa paced the Chanticleers in the Gamecock Open finishing fifth in 18:17.6; leading the team to a second place finish. Kautz lead Coastal to a fourth consecutive Coastal Carolina Invitational title; finishing third overall with a time of 18:31.30.
Also looking to build upon their early season successes are junior Christian Johnson and sophomore Janel Reeves who have placed in the top ten of both meets this season. Freshmen Emily Marchini and Stephanie Taylor will compete in just their second event as collegians. Both runners turned in top ten finishes at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
With the exception of Brusa, this will be the largest meet that any team member has competed in. The meet will be the largest for the Chants since the ISU Pre-Nationals in 2007 for the Chants. This also marks the third time the Chants have competed in the Griak Invitational with the most previous coming in 2001.
“We have a proud history of competing in large, high profile meets here at Coastal,” said coaching veteran Alan Connie. “We are going to be up against some of the top teams and competitors in the country, but as a team, we know that we deserve to be in the field.
“A meet of this caliber gives our (mostly) young team an early experience with the one of the highest levels of competition. This meet will also allow the team to experience running on a top course.”
