Women’s Cross Country Travels to the Great American Cross Country Festival this Weekend

CONWAY, S.C. – Freshman Saskia Janssen (Schwalmtal, Germany/St. Wolfhelm Gymnasium) will lead Coastal Carolina University’s women’s cross country team as it travels to Cary, N.C., to participate in the Great American Cross Country Festival on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Janssen won the Coastal Carolina Invitational witha season-best time of 18:03.98 in the 5k. Other standouts for Coastal include freshmen Felicitas Mensing (Neuhausen, Germany/Leplergy Secondary School) and Estelle Oberson (Geneva, Switzerland/Emillie Gourd) who placed third and fourth with times of 18:36.21 and 18:39.79, respectively.

Junior Danielle Hagler (Beach Haven, N.J./Southern Regional) and sophomore Aubrey Bergquist (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) also finished in the top-10 for Coastal with an eighth (19:42.57) and 10th place finishes (20:04.53), respectively.

The women’s team captured the team victory with an average time of 19:01.42.

This week, at the Great American, the Coastal women will be running in the Nike Race of Champions in the University Division. Among the other 24 teams competing against CCU this weekend are six nationally ranked teams (BYU, William & Mary, North Carolina State, Georgia, Duke and Virginia).

Following Saturday’s event, Coastal will next be in action Oct. 8 as it travels to Greenville, S.C., to compete in the Furman Invitational.
