Cross Country Hosts Coastal Carolina Invitational on Friday

The Coastal Carolina men's and women's cross country team are set to host the Sixth Annual Coastal Carolina Cross Country Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17 at the Quail Creek Golf Course.

CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to host the Sixth Annual Coastal Carolina Cross Country Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17 at the Quail Creek Golf Course.  The event will start at 4 p.m. with the running of high school girls 5k, at 4:45 p.m. will be the high school boys 5k, followed by the collegiate women’s 5k at 5:30 p.m. and finally at 6:10 p.m. the collegiate men’s 6k.

The men’s 6k race will feature seven collegiate teams, the Coastal Carolina Alumni team, and several unattached runners.  The field of teams is highlighted by the 2009 Big South cross country champions, Liberty University; Coastal Carolina, who has won the 2005, ’06, ’07, and ’09 CCU Invitational; and UNC Wilmington, the 2008 CCU Invitational Champions. 

The men’s 6k course record of 19:14 was set last year by Coastal Carolina’s Jamie McCarthy while leading the Chanticleers to 21 point victory over The Citadel. 

This season, the men’s team is led by junior Kyle Kling who finished second in Gamecock Open, the Chanticleers first and only meet thus far in the season, with a time of 15:20 (5k).  Also leading the way for the Chants at the Gamecock Open were senior John Heron (10th, 16:28) and freshman newcomer Cameron Wells (12th, 16:32). 

Junior Rob Delviscio and freshman Andre Enoch crossed the finish line at the Gamecock Open in 17th and 19th place respectively with times of 16:56 and 17:57.  Rounding out the competitors for Coastal the Gamecock Open was sophomore Spencer Lange, who place 26th in the 2009 CCCU Invitational, with a time of 18:27. 

The women’s 5k race will include eight collegiate teams, including the 2009 Big South Champion Liberty University, and unattached runners.

The women’s 5k course record of 17:28 was set in 2006 by Coastal Carolina’s Julia Viellehner.

The Coastal women’s team will look to add a fifth CCU Invitational title to its resume as the team has won the 2005, ’07, ‘08, and ’09 meets.  The team will come into the invitational after placing four runner in the top ten (top nine collegians) at the Gamecock Open on Sept. 3. 

Leading the Chanticleers through one meet this season is graduate student Jamie Brusa with a 5k time of 18:17 at the Gamecock Open to place fifth (fourth collegian) in the meet.  Freshman standout Seanna Kautz finished sixth (fifth collegian) in the meet with a time of 18:19.  Also displaying a strong performance was sophomore Janel Reeves with personal 5k best of 18:20. Junior Christian Johnson also finished in the top ten in the meet as the ninth collegian to cross the finish line with a personal best time of 18:31.

Juniors Rindi Wood (19:30), and Jessica Dennison (21:33) all each had a strong showings in the Gamecock Open with each finishing in the top half of the field.

Parking Information:
The parking lot is very limited at Quail Creek Golf Course and will most likely be full before 4pm. Parking will NOT be allowed on the grass in front of the clubhouse or along the streets in the Quail Creek neighborhood. Some spots will be reserved for team vans in the Quail Creek lot, however Large Activity or Tour buses will have to drop athletes off and park in the overflow lot at CCU. There will be ample parking available at CCU ¼ mile from the Golf Course for spectators. Please encourage any parents and fans you know who plan to attend the cross country meet to park at CCU. There will be golf carts and a 12 passenger vans available to help shuttle spectators or coaches who are driving activity buses who park at CCU to Quail Creek.
