CONWAY, S. C. -- The Coastal Carolina University men's and women's cross country teams will host their only home meet of the season on Friday, Sept. 14. Coastal Carolina will welcome UNC Wilmington, USC Beaufort and Mount Olive to the Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
The men's team is the two-time defending champion of the meet. In 2005, the Chanticleers garnered 20 points and defeated Furman, UNC Wilmington and Mount Olive. Last year, Coastal beat North Carolina 24-32 and then swept East Carolina 15-50. McCarthy's race-winning time of 25:25.64 set a new course record.
The Lady Chanticleers, who are ranked 10th in the Southeast Region, won the meet in 2005 and came in second in 2006. Coastal totaled 26 points in 2005 to beat out UNC Wilmington and Furman for the team title. In 2006, Coastal topped East Carolina 19-37, but fell to North Carolina 24-35. The Coastal women have also won the last two individual titles with Saskia Janssen and Julia Viellehner capturing the 5K race in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Viellehner's time of 17:28.68 also set a new course record.
