Women's Cross Country Opens Season at Gamecock Invitational

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University women's cross country team starts preparation for its defense of it its 2008 Big South Championship title when it opens the 2009 season at the Gamecock Invitational on Sept. 4 in Columbia, S.C.

Last season, the Chanticleers had the top two finishers at the Gamecock Invitational in Christian Johnson (18:51.95f) and Shelby Donahue. The team finished second overall and ran shorthanded without three of its top five runners.

Coastal Carolina's top returnees include All-Big South honoree Maranie Staab and Big South Rookie of the Year Christian Johnson. Other returnees from last season's top seven runners include Joyce Curtin, Shelby Donahue, Theresa Schamberger, and Rindi Wood.

The Chanticleers welcome three new freshman to the squad, Janel Reeves, Emma Hulburd, and Jessica Dennison. Reeves was the Virginia Class AA State Cross Country Champion and Hulburd was the Vermont Division II State Track Champion. Dennison was named to the Indiana All-District Cross Country and Track team.

The meet is scheduled to start on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with the men's 5k followed by the women's 5k starting at 7 p.m.
