Women’s Cross Country Places Second at Gamecock Invitational

FORT JACKSON, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina University women’s cross country team opened up its 2008 season Fri. Aug 29 by taking part in the Gamecock Invitational in Fort Jackson, S.C.

The Chanticleers had the top two finishers, as freshman Christian Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) opened up her collegiate career with a victory, taking the individual crown with a time of 18:51.96. Teammate Shelby Donahue (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) placed second behind Johnson with a time of 18:57.26 in the 5k race.

South Carolina edged out Coastal Carolina for the team title, as the Gamecocks had seven of the top 10 finishers, good for 25 team points. The Chants placed second with 42 team points.

 

The Chants other top finishers were Theresa Schamberger (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble), who placed ninth and Rindi Wood (Charleston, S.C./James Island), who finished 15th.

 

“I was very pleased with the 1-2 finish at the top, and our overall solid performance,” a pleased Coastal Carolina Head Coach Alan Connie remarked. “Special congratulations to both Christian and Shelby, one for winning her first collegiate race, and the other a dramatic improvement from last year. Those are only some of the positives to take away from this race.”

 

The Chants will next be in action on Sept. 13 as they host the fourth annual Coastal Carolina University Invitational from Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway starting at 8 a.m.
