Women's Cross Country Tabbed 2nd in Preseason Poll

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - The Coastal Carolina women's cross country team was tabbed second in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll by the league's head cross country coaches, as announced today by the conference office.

The 12-time Big South Champion Chanticleer women's squad totaled 111 votes, second only to two-time defending champion Liberty's 115 points. However, the Chants did receive six first place nods to Liberty's five. VMI came in No. 3 with 98 points, followed by High Point with 90 points and UNC Asheville with 73 points to round out the top five. At No. 6 was Winthrop, who received 60 points, ahead of Campbell (59 points) and Gardner-Webb (46 points). Radford landed at No. 9 with 33 points and at No. 10 was Charleston Southern with 30 points. Presbyterian College finished up the voting with 11 points.

Coastal, led by veteran head coach Alan Connie, returns for of its five runners that scored in last year's Big South Championship meet, including All-Big South Conference honorees Emily Marchini and Christian Johnson. Also returning are Janel Reeves, named to the 2010 Big South All-Academic team, and sophomore Seanna Kautz.

Additionally, Connie welcomes freshmen Brianne Brady, Briana D'amato, and Samantha McElroy to the team as the Chants look to claim their first conference title since 2008.

Coastal will open its 2011 campaign on Sept. 2, when the Chanticleers compete in the South Carolina Gamecock Open. The women's 5K race will begin at 6 p.m.
