Women's Cross Country Picked as Preseason Favorite

     Charlotte, N.C.- The Big South Conference office announced today (August 16) that Coastal Carolina University's women's cross country team has been chosen first in the Big South Conference preseason poll, as voted by the League's Head Cross Country Coaches and Sports Information Directors.   Coastal Carolina, under head coach Alan Connie, has been picked to win its sixth-straight Big South women's cross country title, receiving 13 first-place votes and 157 out of a possible 162 points.  The Lady Chanticleers, who have claimed a Big South-record 11 championships, finished 16 points ahead of second-place Liberty University.  High Point was predicted third followed by Winthrop, VMI, UNC Asheville, Radford, Birmingham-Southern and Charleston Southern.    Coastal has nine letterwinners returning from last year's Big South Championship team and brings in four newcomers for the 2006 season.    The New Balance men's and women's cross country Conference Championship is slated for Saturday, October 28, and will be hosted by Charleston Southern University.    The Lady Chanticleers open their season on Friday, September 1 at the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C., at 5 p.m.
