BOONE, N.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University women's cross country squad finished ninth at the 2009 Blue Ridge Open, Oct. 16. The event was hosted by Appalachian State and featured 15 squads in the Gold 5k Run.
Running without three of their top seven runners, the Chanticleers scred a total of 208 points to finish ninth and still finishing ahead of Clemson, College of Charleston and UNC Asheville. Duke took home the team title by taking five of the top six spots and scoring 18 points, 86 points ahead of runner-up Virginia Tech.
Shelby Donahue was the top Coastal runner, finishing 30th at 19:04.26, just ahead of teammate Janel Reeves in 31st in 19:04.66. Teresa Schamberger was next in 63rd at 19:43.88 followed by Christian Johnson in 73rd in 19:52.96. Jessica Dennison placed 95th in 20:19.08, with Rindi Wood rounding out the Chants' effort in 109th at 20:47.72.
"This was a tough race for us to go without three of our top seven, but I am proud of how the ladies ran today overall," Head Coach Alan Connie said. "The Big South Championship is going to be very, very competitive and it is going to be a battle to defend our title."
The Chants look to defend their Big South crown at the 2009 Big South Conference Championships, Sat., Oct. 31 in High Point, N.C. at 11 a.m.
