ORLANDO, Fla.- The Coastal Carolina women’s cross country team earned a spot on the podium as the third place finishers at the Walt Disney World Classic. The 5k meet took place around the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
South Carolina won the event with a team score of 67 followed by John Hopkins with 81 and Coastal with 83. Florida Atlantic (127) and Houston (162) rounded out the top five of the 24 team field.
Coastal’s five scoring runners finished in the top 25 of the 213 competitor field finishing in a mere 24 second gap of one another.
Leading the Chanticleers once again was Jamie Brusa crossing the finish line in 11th with a time of 18:19. Brusa has led the Chants in each of the three meets she has competed in this season. Closely following Brusa across the finish line was Emily Marchini in 15th with a personal best time of 18:24, Christian Johnson in 18th with a time of 18:29, Seanna Kautz in 20th (18:38) and Jessica Dennison in 23rd (18:43).
Dennison’s time was a new career personal best for the sophomore, shattering her previous record by a full 55 seconds.
“I was very pleased with the way we raced as a whole today,” said head coach Alan Connie. “As a team, we set goals for today’s race and were able to achieve all of them.
“The ladies are continuing to develop both individually and as team as we work toward the championship portion of the season.”
Coastal will return to action on Friday, October 15, as the team takes part in the Blue Ridge Mountain Open hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.
