BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Coastal Carolina women's cross country team turned in several impressive finishes at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, September 30.
Coastal competed in the 6-kilometer Gold race that featured seven of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 teams including four teams in the Top 10 along with numerous teams favored in their respective conferences.
The Chanticleers bested Big South member Winthrop along with regional foes Western Carolina and Virginia Commonwealth on their way to a 41st place finish in the 45 team field. The Chants accumulated a total team score of 1,065 as all five Coastal scorers finished within 1:06 of one another.
Senior Christian Johnson and sophomore Emily Marchini finished the race with an identical time of 22:49 to lead Coastal. Junior Janel Reeves crossed the finish line third for the black and teal clad Chants in a 23:32 clip. Stephanie Taylor, a sophomore, finished the course in a personal-best 23:48 followed by Shelby Nicosia in 23:54 to round out the Chanticleer scorers.
"We were able to compete in a very large national meet today against some of the top competition in the country," said head coach Alan Connie. "This was a great experience for the team as we head into the championship portion of the season."
The Chants are off next week before returning to action on Oct. 14 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. The race will be Coastal's final tune-up before hosting the Big South Championship meet on Oct. 29.
