COLUMBIA, S.C. – Without three of its top runners, the Coastal Carolina women’s cross country team managed to finish third out of 13 schools behind South Carolina and Clemson in its opening meet of the season at the Gamecock Open 5k. Clemson’s Kelsey Armstrong claimed the individual victory with a time of 17:51.03.
Junior Shelby Donahue was the Chanticleers’ top finisher and third overall with a time of 18:12.49, a new personal best. Freshman Janel Reeves finished behind Donahue at fourth overall with a personal best of 18:20.35. Senior Theresa Schamberger finished 12th at 19:07.40 followed by the 2008 Big South Rookie of the Year Christian Johnson at 13th with a time of 19:11.72. Redshirt sophomore Rindi Wood finished in the 21st spot with a time of 19:50.90 and freshman Jessica Dennison was right behind her at 29th with her time of 20:28.19. Senior Peggy Busbee rounded out the pack at 36th with a time of 21:01.07.
“I was overall pleased with the team’s performance in their first race,” Head Coach Alan Connie said. “Shelby Donahue and Janel Reeves both had strong races, a personal best for both and with three of our top runners not competing; it bodes well for us when we can get everyone healthy and in the lineup.”
The squad returns home to host the Coastal Carolina University Invitational at Quail Creek Golf Course on Fri., Sept. 18. The women are slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
