CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina University volleyball Head Coach Kristen Bauer would like to announce two players that will be on the 2011-2012 squad, including Melissa McGwin and Katie Martin.
McGwin will begin classes at Coastal in the spring after earning varsity letters for volleyball the last two years. She helped lead her team to being Monroe County Section V Class AA Division II Champions the last two years. As a senior, she set the school record for the most blocks in a career at Hilton. She was selected to the All-County second team her junior year and also received the Presidential Award for academics. She was a member of the Volleyfx club team, who were the Nets 2 Champions, Winter Challenge Champions, MAPL Champions and Regional Champions. Her club team has qualified for Nationals twice.
"We are very excited to have a new player starting with us in January," Bauer said. "This will be the first time I have had a player come in the Spring to train prior to competing in the Fall. Middle blockers usually need an adjustment period to get used to the speed of the college game and Melissa will have that opportunity. We look forward to her training with us and making us bigger in the front row."
Martin has been an honor roll student for the past three years and has been a main contributor to her team. She helped her team to winning seasons and received the Athletic Award as a freshman, sophomore and junior. Her freshman year, she was pulled up to varsity for the North Coast Section championships. She was named first team All-league her sophomore and junior years. During her junior year, she registered 300 blocks and 196 kills.
"Katie will be joining us in the Fall of 2011 and is another middle blocker," Bauer said. "She visited campus early and was pleased with our new weight room facility and the new convocation center right around the corner. Katie is quick and powerful in the middle and will allow us to have many offensive options as far as lineups are concerned."
