CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina volleyball team begins its pursuit of a Big South tournament championship on Thursday when it faces Presbyterian in a quarterfinal match of the Big South Championship.
The second-seeded Chanticleers will meet the seventh-seeded Blue Hose at 7:30 p.m. inside the Templeton Center on the campus of Presbyterian College. The winner advances to a semifinal matchup against either No. 3 High Point or No. 6 Winthrop on Friday.
Under second-year head coach Jozsef Forman, Coastal is coming off a second-place finish in the conference during the regular season for the second-straight year. The Chants won four of their last five matches to finish 10-4 in the Big South and improve to 17-11 overall.
Coastal advanced all the way to the championship match last season before falling to top-seed Liberty 3-1.
Sophomore Gabriella Horvath leads the team in kills for the second-straight year with 299 heading into postseason play. She was recently named first team All-Big South. Second team All-Big South selection Lian Bernett ranks second on the team in kills with 293 while Horvath and Bernett are tied for the team lead with 34 service aces. Horvath and Bernett also have over 200 digs with 221 and 226, respectively. Second team All-Big South selection and All-Academic Team selection Lauren Alejo sets up the offense with 1,050 assists. She also has a tough serve with 27 service aces.
Defensively, first team All-Big South selection Kindra Bailey leads the team with 97 blocks on the year. She also has 230 kills and leads the entire Big South with a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Eszter Nagy will also be a force defensively with 80 blocks. Nagy also has 192 kills and a .289 hitting percentage. Senior Lindsay Gill wil secure the back row with 473 digs while four others have 190 or more digs as well including Horvath, Bernett, Alejo and junior Jenna Orner.
The Chants have gone 1-1 against Presbyterian this season with a 3-2 loss at PC on Sept. 28 and a 3-1 win at home on Nov. 2.
Coastal is seeking its fourth Big South tournament championship, along with the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament that comes with it.
The semifinals will be played at 4:30 and 7 p.m. on Friday at the Templeton Center, with the final scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be streamed live on the Big South Network, while the final will be aired live on ESPN3.
