Volleyball Ends Season with a 10-23 record

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team ended its 2006 season with a 10-23 record, 4-10 in the conference. The Lady Chanticleers reached the Big South Semifinals after upsetting Liberty in the First Round and taking second seeded UNC Asheville to five games.

Rooster Round-up

Liberty...

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team upset the third place Lady Flames of Liberty, 3-1 in Lynchburg on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The game scores were 30-21, 30-25, 24-30, 30-25.

Liberty was led by Autum Black who had a .484 hitting percentage off of 18 kills and Kendall Nichols who ended with 10 kills and 10 digs. Kallie Corbin ended the night with 51 assists. Liberty hit .220 and had 10 total blocks.

The Lady Chanticleers were led by Jill Nyhof who had 21 kills and 10 digs and Nakia Thompson who had her 14th double-double, recording 18 kills and 15 digs on a .424 hitting percentage. Laura Obert also had double-digits in kills with 10. Meagan Tracey ended the night with 49 assists. As a team, Coastal had 28 errors with a .236 hitting percentage and 12 total blocks.

UNC Asheville....

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team finished its season with an 10-23 record after falling to UNC Asheville in a thrilling five game match-up in the tournament semifinals. The game scores were 28-30, 28-30, 30-18, 30-28 and 14-16.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Elif Unlu who ended with 18 kills and 18 digs, Ashley Wrightenberry and Alysha Greer each recorded 15 kills while Emily Palma added 12 and Ficker tallied 10. Kaitlyn McDaniel had 29 assists with 12 digs and Raquel Miotto ended the night with 29 digs. As a team, UNCA had 74 kills on 26 errors with a .219 hitting percentage and nine total blocks.

Coastal was again led by Nyhof, who had a career-best 27 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Thompson and Ashley Scheible each ended the match with 13 kills while Thompson scooped up 18 digs. Obert also had a strong final performance with 12 kills. Brett Starbuck led the defense with 31 digs and Tracey had 57 assists with 19 digs. As a team, Coastal hit .221 on 77 kills and 33 errors.

Nyhof Named to All-Tournament Team

Coastal’s Jill Nyhof was named to the All-Tournament team for her 48 kills in two games. She recorded 21 kills on a .215 hitting percentage with 10 digs in the upset against Liberty during the Big South First Round and then had 27 kills on a .400 hitting percentage and nine digs.

Coastal Gets Two on All-Conference

The Coastal Carolina volleyball team’s Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) was named to the 2006 All-Freshman Team and Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was named Academic All-Conference, the Big South announced on Nov. 13. before the start of the 2006 Big South Volleyball Tournament.

Nyhof, a middle blocker, has led the Lady Chanticleer offensive this season recording 356 kills and starting in all 31 matches for Coastal. Nyhof has a .202 hitting percentage, averaging 2.99 kills per game. She has also recorded 181 digs and 57 blocks. Currently, Nyhof ranks eighth in the Big South for hitting percentage and 10th in kills. She has recorded three double-doubles on the season and has been named Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week once this season.

Obert, a senior middle blocker, was selected to the 2006 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III University Division Volleyball Second Team for the 2006 season along with this Academic All-Conference honor.

Around the Big South...

Meagan Tracey recorded 12 double-doubles and seven 50-plus assist matches this season. She has also had one 70-plus and ranks seventh with 1065 assists. She is currently fifth in the Big South, averaging 10.24 assists per game.

Nakia Thompson had 16 double-doubles.

Kristin Rinne had five.

Brett Starbuck had four.

Jill Nyhof also had four.

Megan Pollard ranks eighth in the conference in digs with 358 and a 4.07 average per game

Starbuck has had five 20-plus dig matches and one 30-plus dig match. She is currently ninth in the Big South with 313 digs, averaging 3.77 per game.

Laura Obert finished fourth on the blocking list with 126 blocks (15 solo, 111 assisted), averaging 1.05 per game. Obert also moved into the third slot on the CCU all-time block list with 319 career blocks.

Ashley Scheible moved into the ninth slot with 104 total blocks (14 solo, 90 assisted), averaging 0.88 per game. She currently is seventh on the CCU all-time list with 236 career blocks.

Jill Nyhof currently ranks seventh in the Big South for hitting percentage with .215 and 10th in kills with 404 kills in 128 games. She averages 3.16 kills per game.

Kristin Rinne has moved up to sixth on the CCU all-time dig list with 1,290 digs. She scooped up 286 digs this season.

Nyhof Earns Honors for the Second Time...

Jill Nyhof was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week for the week ending November 5.

Nhyof, a freshman middle blocker, posted 59 kills, 4.21 kills per game and a .328 hitting percentage to lead her Lady Chanticleers to a 2-1 record on the week with wins over regional power the College of Charleston and Big South foe UNC Asheville. She got her week started with 17 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as Coastal Carolina downed the Lady Cougars on Oct. 31. On Nov. 4, the middle blocker put away 22 kills, two aces and hit .360 in CCU’s 3-1 win over the second-place Lady Bulldogs. She finished her week with 20 kills against Birmingham-Southern on Nov. 5. Defensively, she posted 17 digs for the Lady Chanticleers to go along with five blocks.

This is the second honor earned by Nyhof in the 2006, she was named New Balance Freshman of the Week as announced by the Big South Conference on Monday, September 25.
