Volleyball Defeats Charleston Southern 3-0, Advance to Semis of Big South Tourney

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– The second-seeded Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (21-10) used 16 kills for sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) and the Lady Chants held seventh-seeded Charleston Southern University (15-19) to a -.085 hitting percentage as Coastal defeated CSU 3-0 in the first quarterfinal of the 2003 Big South Tournament, sponsored by Piggly Wiggly, in Birmingham, Ala. Game scores were 30-18, 30-22 and 30-21.

Freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) added nine kills for the Lady Chants, who hit .221 for the contest. Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) led Coastal with 11 digs while Jensen, who was selected to the All-Big South First Team last night, added 10 digs. Hampton also had 44 assists in the win.

Coastal also had a season-high 14 blocks, led by sophomore Krista Kimble’s (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) seven total blocks.

Coastal will play third-seeded Winthrop University Saturday, Nov. 22, at 5:30 p.m. (EST) in the semifinals of the Big South Tournament.
