Volleyball Receives Big South Honors

CONWAY, S.C.Coastal Carolina’s volleyball team had three players named to the All-Big South Conference teams as well as Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, announced tonight (Nov. 18) at the 2005 Big South Volleyball Tournament banquet in Conway, S.C.   Senior Katherine Jensen-Spencer was named the Big South Player of Year as well as Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Jensen-Spencer has recorded a total of 550 kills for the season, giving her a career-total of 1,549. This places her in second on CCU’s all-time records. Jensen-Spencer also has 421 digs for the season and a career-total 1,320 holding the fourth spot on Coastal’s all-time list. She has been named the Big South Player of the Week twice during the current season. Jensen-Spencer also received the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for her 3.85 cumulative grade-point average up to the 2005 spring semester.   Head coach Kristen Bauer was named the Big South Coach of the Year for her 12-2 Big South record during the 2005 season. It is the second time that she has received this award, as she was honored as the 2000 Coach of the Year.  Bauer has led the Lady Chanticleers to a 19-10 overall record, had an eight-match winning streak from Sept. 17-Oct. 8 and a six-match winning streak from Oct. 21-Nov. 4.  Coastal defeated UNC Asheville twice for the first time in Bauer's tenure and took regular-season champion Winthrop to five games in both matches this season.   Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and Jensen-Spencer were named to the first team All-Big South Conference team. Hampton has a total of 1289 assists for the 2005 season and a career total of 5,316. She averaged 12.37 assists per game. She holds the third spot on CCU’s all-time records with 1,339 digs and was named the Big South Player of the Week once during the season.   Freshman Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) was named to the All-Freshman team. Starbuck recorded a season and career high of 19 digs at Charleston Southern Nov. 11. She finished the season with 154 digs, 12 service aces and 43 kills. She was named the Big South/New Balance Freshman of the Week once during the season.   Coastal (19-10), the second seed, will face third-seeded UNC Asheville Saturday, Nov. 19 in match six of the 2005 Big South Volleyball Tournament.  The first serve is at 5 p.m.
