Coastal Volleyball to Play Winthrop in Big South Tournament

CONWAY - The #7 seed Coastal Carolina volleyball team will be playing the #2 seed Winthrop in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.

Coastal grabbed the seven seed after finishing the regular season with a 5-9 Big South Conference record. The Chants also completed the regular season with an overall record of 13-19.

Coastal Carolina wrapped up the regular season ranked 45th in the nation in aces per set with a 1.47 and ranked second in the Big South in service aces. During the regular season the Chants averaged 14.5 digs, 11.8 kills, 10.9 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 aces per set, while also notching an attack percentage of .181.

Sophomore Kindra Bailey is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.296), freshman Lian Bernett is fifth in kills (2.87) and fellow classmate Katie Martin is fifth in service aces (0.31). Martin is also leading the team in blocks with an average of 0.73 per set. Also ranked in the conference is sophomore Sam Skryd who is sixth in assists (8.94) and sophomore Lindsay Gill is eighth in digs (3.72).

Winthrop claimed a share of the regular season Big South championship, along with Liberty, after finishing with a 12-2 record in the league. The Eagles also concluded the regular season with an overall record of 19-7.

Winthrop averaged 16.2 digs, 12.4 kills, 11.3 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.4 aces per set during the regular season. The Eagles also finished the regular season with an attacking percentage of .206.

Becca Toor is leading the conference in hitting percentage (.365), she is second in kills (3.52) and eighth in blocks (0.83). Mullins is third in the league in blocks (1.15), Palmer is fifth in assists (9.16), Lauren Landsman is sixth in service aces (0.31).

The Chanticleers will be playing Winthrop for the second straight year in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Tournament and for the sixth time overall. Coastal will be looking to earn their first ever win over the Eagles in the tournament. Winthrop won the quarterfinal match against the Chants last year by a score of 3-0.

The Chants last won the Big South Tournament in 2009 when they beat #5 High Point (3-2), #1 UNC Asheville (3-0) and #2 Liberty (3-1). Coastal then played Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament.
