Volleyball Seeded Second in Next Weeks BSC Volleyball Tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- For the first time since 1992, UNC Asheville has earned the number one seed for the 2002 Big South Conference Volleyball Championship, which will be played at Winthrop University beginning Thursday. Every match of the tournament will be StatCast through the League’s website.

The Bulldogs finished the season at 12-2 in Conference play. They will face eighth-seeded High Point, which closed out the Conference season at 2-12, at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Second-seeded Coastal Carolina finished at 11-3 and tied for second place with Winthrop, who also finished with a 11-3 League mark. The Lady Chants earned the tiebreaker by sweeping Winthrop during the regular season. Coastal will play seventh-seeded Charleston Southern on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. The Lady Bucs finished the regular season with a Conference record of 3-11.

Third-seeded Winthrop will play sixth-seeded Radford at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Radford finished tied with Elon for fifth at 4-10 in Conference. The two teams split their regular season meetings, so Elon earned the fifth seed with a better games won-lost record. Liberty, which closed out the Conference season at 9-5, earned the fourth seed and will face fifth-seeded Elon on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.

The winner of the UNC Asheville-High Point match will face the winner of the Liberty-Elon match in the first semifinal on Friday at 5:00 p.m. The winner of the Coastal Carolina-Charleston Southern match will play the winner of the Winthrop-Radford match at 7:00 p.m. in the second semifinal on Friday. The championship match will be played at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the volleyball championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
