Volleyball Closes Regular Season with 3-1 Win over High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C..– For the fifth time in school history and for the second straight season, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (20-10, 11-3 Big South) has won 20 matches in a year as the Lady Chants defeated High Point University (8-27, 1-13 Big South) 3-1 in the regular season finale Nov. 15, in High Point, N.C. Game scores were 30-27, 30-19, 29-31 and 30-12.

Coastal hit .217 for the match, compared with .108 for the Panthers. Coastal won six of the last seven points in game one to escape with a 30-27 win. Coastal then forced High Point into a .073 hitting percentage to take game two 30-19. High Point had two straight kills at 29-all in game three to pull within two games to one, but Coastal overpowered High Point in game four, hitting .317 to -.125 for the Panthers.

Senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) each had double-doubles for Coastal. Jensen had 16 kills and 18 digs, while Bennett went for 11 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) was the third Lady Chant in double figures in digs with 12. Sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had 42 assists in the win.

Coastal had 13 blocks, as sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) led the Lady Chants with six total blocks (two solo, four assisted). Freshmen Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) added five and four, respectively.

Coastal will be the second seed heading into the Big South Tournament Friday, Nov. 21. The Lady Chants will face either Charleston Southern University or Radford University at 5:30 p.m. (EST).
