Nov. 13, 2017

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Sun Belt Conference announced its final weekly volleyball awards for the 2017 season on Monday, with Coastal Carolina student-athletes Leah Hardeman and Sydney Alvis earning Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

The Offensive honor is the sixth of the season for Hardeman, making her the only volleyball athlete in the conference to win a weekly award six times this season. Alvis is taking her second Defensive honor this year.

The pair of Chants helped Coastal finish off its regular season schedule this past weekend with wins at South Alabama and Troy. The final victory gave Coastal its 12th straight win, and clinched the top overall seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference championship.

Hardeman averaged 4.57 kills per set with a .433 hitting percentage. She also added five blocks and an ace to total 36.5 points for the weekend.

Alvis averaged a team-leading 5.43 digs per set, helping the Coastal defense limit its two opponents to a combined .063 hitting percentage. The junior also had six assists and a pair of service aces.

With the top overall seed in the tournament, Coastal advances directly to the semifinals. The Chants begin their Sun Belt title defense at 7:30 pm (CT) on Saturday versus the winner of the quarterfinal match between #4 Arkansas State and #5 South Alabama/#8 Troy.

The 2017 Sun Belt Championship is set for Nov. 16-19 in Jonesboro, Ark., with Arkansas State serving as the host institution. All matches will be broadcast on ESPN. For more information, visit Sun Belt Volleyball Championship Central.
