Volleyball's Nyhof and Obert Earn Conference Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina volleyball team's Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) was named to the 2006 All-Freshman Team and Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was named Academic All-Conference, the Big South announced today (Nov. 13) before the start of the 2006 Big South Volleyball Tournament.

Nyhof, a middle blocker, has led the Lady Chanticleer offensive this season recording 356 kills and starting in all 31 matches for Coastal. Nyhof has a .202 hitting percentage, averaging 2.99 kills per game. She has also recorded 181 digs and 57 blocks. Currently, Nyhof ranks eighth in the Big South for hitting percentage and 10th in kills. She has recorded three double-doubles on the season and has been named Freshman of the Week and Player of the Week once this season.

Obert, a senior middle blocker, was selected to the 2006 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III University Division Volleyball Second Team for the 2006 season along with this Academic All-Conference honor.

Obert has been named to the President's List four times for her 3.95 grade-point-average. Obert has competed in all but one match in her career as a Lady Chanticleer and has notched Big South honors twice in her career. Obert currently ranks fourth on the CCU All-Time career blocks list and third in the Big South for blocking with 310 blocks.

Winthrop's middle hitter Taryn Surbaugh and Eagle head coach Joel McCartney were voted the 2006 Big South Volleyball Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, by the League's coaches and sports information directors. Liberty setter Kallie Corbin was named Freshman of the Year, the conference announced today (Nov. 13). Winthrop's Emily Heckl was also named Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the sports information directors.

The 2006 Big South Volleyball Championship begins Tuesday, November 14 with matches at the highest seeds with the final four taking place at the Millis Center on the campus of High Point University. The Lady Chanticleers travel to Lynchburg, Va. to take on the third-place Lady Flames on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
