Volleyball in Big South Quarterfinals
The Coastal Carolina volleyball team heads to the Big South First Round (Quarterfinals) this Tuesday in Lynchburg, Va. to take on the Liberty Flames for the third time this season. The Flames have defeated the Lady Chanticleers twice this season, both times in four games. Liberty is currently 11-17 and 9-5 in the conference. That match is set for 7 p.m., on Tuesday, November 14.
Scouting Liberty:
The Lady Flames have had a turn around season this year under head coach Shane Pinder posting a 11-17 overall record. Liberty posted a 9-22 record last season, 5-9 in the conference a year ago. This season, they hold the third spot going into the conference tournament, giving them homecourt advantage.
In the first meeting, Liberty got the 3-1 victory over the Lady Chanticleers. They were led by Mary Alice Pike who had 13 kills and 12 digs and Kendall Nichols who had 13 kills and 15 digs. Coastal was led by Ashley Scheible and Jill Nyhof who both had 12 kills. Nakia Thompson had 10 kills and 10 digs while Kristin Rinne had 10 kills and eight digs.
In the second meeting, the Lady Chants were defeated by Liberty again 3-1. In this matchup, the Lady Flames were led by Autum Black who had 12 kills, Alysson Sanders, who had 11 kills and 13 digs and Stephanie Stow, who also tallied 11 kills. Coastal was led by Nyhof, who had 15 kills and nine digs and Rinne, who had 13 kills and 14 digs.
The Lady Flames got the come from behind win against Radford on November 11. After losing the first two games, the Lady Flames rallied to get the 3-2 win over the Lady Highlanders. The Lady Flames were led by setter Kallie Corbin who recorded a triple-double in the match with 45 assists, 14 kills and 20 digs. Mary Alice Pike had 14 kills and 10 digs with Alysson Sanders adding 10 kills and 21 digs. Autum Black ended the night with 10 kills.
Series Against....
Liberty leads the series against Coastal 18-15. This season was the first time since 2003 that the Lady Flames not only picked up a win against the Lady Chants, but swept them. The last time these two teams faced each other in the Big South Tournament was in 2001 when Liberty got the 3-1 win.
Rooster Round-up
Charleston Southern...
The Coastal Carolina volleyball team (9-22, 4-10) swept the Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers (8-21, 1-13) 3-0 at Kimbel Arena for Senior Night. The game scores were 30-28, 30-26 and 30-21.
The Lady Buccaneers were led by Ashlee Kadatz who ended the night hitting .375 on 10 kills and 14 digs. Jillian Worby finished with nine kills and 10 digs while Jenni Shepherd and Canan Erdogan each tallied seven. Shepherd also scooped up 11 digs. Libero Miki Wilson had 20 digs and Sasan ended with 25 assists. As a team, Charleston Southern hit .139 with 21 errors and recorded seven total blocks.
Coastal had two players with double-doubles on the evening. Thompson picked up her 13th after having 10 kills and 17 digs while Nyhof got her third double-double on 13 kills and 12 digs hitting .333. However, the real story for Coastal was the senior leadership on the night. Scheible led the offensive effort for the Lady Chants, tallying 14 kills with a .440 hitting percentage, which tied her season-high. Laura Obert ended the night with 12 kills having her second straight game with a hitting percentage over .300. She ended with a .345 hitting percentage and recorded seven total blocks. Rinne ended the night recording eight kills and eight digs. Also having a strong performance for Coastal was libero Brett Starbuck who recorded her fourth 20-plus dig match scooping up 28 balls and Meagan Tracey who had 52 assists, her sixth 50-plus assist match on the season. As a team, Coastal had a .263 hitting percentage on 18 errors with 10 total blocks.
Nyhof Earns Honors for the Second Time...
Jill Nyhof was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week for the week ending November 5.
Nhyof, a freshman middle blocker, posted 59 kills, 4.21 kills per game and a .328 hitting percentage to lead her Lady Chanticleers to a 2-1 record on the week with wins over regional power the College of Charleston and Big South foe UNC Asheville. She got her week started with 17 kills and a .500 hitting percentage as Coastal Carolina downed the Lady Cougars on Oct. 31. On Nov. 4, the middle blocker put away 22 kills, two aces and hit .360 in CCUs 3-1 win over the second-place Lady Bulldogs. She finished her week with 20 kills against Birmingham-Southern on Nov. 5. Defensively, she posted 17 digs for the Lady Chanticleers to go along with five blocks.
This is the second honor earned by Nyhof in the 2006, she was named New Balance Freshman of the Week as announced by the Big South Conference on Monday, September 25. Nyhof currently leads the team in kills tallying 343 kills with a .198 hitting percentage. She has also been responsible for 391 total points with 169 digs and 65 blocks.
Around the Big South...
Meagan Tracey has recorded 11 double-doubles and six 50-plus assist matches so far this season. She has also had one 70-plus and ranks seventh with 748 assists. She is currently sixth in the Big South, averaging 10.09 assists per game.
Nakia Thompson has 13 double-doubles.
Kristin Rinne has five.
Brett Starbuck has four.
Jill Nyhof has three.
Megan Pollard currently ranks eighth in the conference in digs with 358 and a 4.07 average per game.
Starbuck has had five 20-plus dig matches and one 30-plus dig match. She is currently ninth in the Big South with 267 digs, averaging 3.61 per game.
Laura Obert moved to fourth on the blocking list with 117 blocks (15 solo, 102 assisted), averaging 1.05 per game. Obert also moved into the fourth slot on the CCU all-time block list with 310 career blocks. She needs three more blocks to move into third place. This season she has beaten her previous 2004 record of 101 blocks in a season, which is third on the CCU all-time single season block list. She has also tied her 2004 record of 117 blocks in a single season, she is fourth on that list.
Ashley Scheible moved into the ninth slot with 96 total blocks (14 solo, 82 assisted), averaging 0.88 per game. She currently is eighth on the CCU all-time list with 218 career blocks.
Jill Nyhof currently ranks eighth in the Big South for hitting percentage with .202 and 10th in kills with 356 kills in 119 games. She averages 2.99 kills per game.
Kristin Rinne has moved up to sixth on the CCU all-time dig list with 1274 digs. She has scooped up 270 digs so far this season.

High Point University plays host for the remaing tournamnet games. Semifinal games will be at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, with the championship game being on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 4:00 pm. Schedule with teams will be announced after first round games.
Wrap-up...
Coastal Carolina looks to turn around its worst season since 1994 in the tournament. This season was also the first time head coach Kristen Bauer didnt win more than 10 games since her start at CCU in 1998. The last time Bauer had a losing season was in 2001, when the Lady Chanticleers fell in the first round of the conference to Liberty 3-1. They ended their season with a 10-20 record.
However, seniors Obert, Rinne and Scheible has helped their team reach the Big South Championship game twice in their four years and are looking to pick up their first Big South title since 1998.
