Volleyball Wins At Charleston Southern In Five Games

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s volleyball team defeated Charleston-Southern in five games Friday, Nov. 11, in scores of 28-30, 30-27, 24-30, 30-24 and 15-8.   In game one, Charleston Southern controlled the game early with a 10-6 lead. The Buccaneers continued to lead 14-9 until a kill from Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) got the Lady Chanticleers back into the game. CCU could not hold on and CSU continued to dominate. At a 25-20 lead in favor of CSU, Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had a kill that sent the Lady Chants on a short two-point run for the 22-26 deficit. CCU and CSU continued to battle back and forth point by point, but the Buccaneers held on for the 30-28 win.   Game two was another back and forth battle between the Lady Chants and the Lady Bucs. CSU started off ahead with a 6-2 lead that was ended by an attack error against Charleston Southern. After a kill from Kimble, the Lady Chants continued to whittle away at the CSU lead until 23-22 CSU. A kill from Katherine Jensen-Spencer (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary (Mississippi)) sent CCU on a five-point run and gave the Lady Chants the 27-23 lead, eventually winning it 30-27.   Game three was a close back and forth match with neither team jumping ahead more than three points until late in the game. At 14-12, a kill by CSU's Katie O’ Riordan sent the Lady Bucs on a four-point run, giving them a lead they would never relinquish. The Bucs continued to lead and won the third game, 30-24.   CCU got the slight early lead in the fourth game, not letting the gap be more than two points at 8-6. CCU then sparked a 6-0 run on a kill by Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro). CCU continued to control the game until the Buccaneers caught up at a 20-20 tie. With CSU leading 21-20, a kill from Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley ) set CCU off for four unanswered points and a 24-21 lead. The Lady Chants continued to control the game late and won the fourth game, 30-24.   In the fifth and final game, CSU started early with the 2-0 lead until an attack error from Victoria Owens helped the Lady Chants get into the game. The game continued with back and forth battles. At a 7-7 tie, Laura Obert's kill sent the Lady Chants on a four-point run to lead 11-7. CSU tried to answer with a point making the difference 11-8, but CCU scored the final four points of the match to get the victory in the final game, 15-8.   Jensen-Spencer led the Lady Chants with 28 kills and 25 digs. Hampton tallied 67 assists and seven digs. Obert accumulated 14 kills while Thompson added 12. Brett Starbuck contributed a career-high 19 digs in the victory.   Leading CSU’s effort was Jillian Worby with 16 kills and nine digs. Callie Kovel recorded 24 digs in the Buccaneers effort while O’Riodran added 13 kills.   The second-seeded Lady Chanticleers will now host the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference Tournament Tuesday, Nov. 15 where they will face seventh-seeded Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.
