CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's volleyball team ended the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Charleston Southern Friday night, Nov. 9 at CSU Field House. Game scores were 27-30, 30-16, 30-25, 30-25.
"The ratio of aces-to-errors made the difference," Head Coach Kristen Bauer said. "Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) had strong offensive performances tonight with .417 and .304 hitting percentages, respectively. Also, the libero efforts of Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville), who was playing libero for just the second time this season, contributed to our win."
After game one slipped away, Coastal (14-16, 6-6 Big South) found the spark it needed in game two. The Lady Chanticleers outhit Charleston Southern .455 to .053 in game two, converting on 18 kills with only three errors. Meanwhile, the Lady Buccaneers (10-20, 1-11, Big South) got nine kills, but made seven errors.
Throughout game two, Coastal maintained a comfortable lead. Kimes started a seven-point run that led to a 13-point Coastal advantage. Freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) served the final five points as the Lady Chants won the game by a 14-point margin.
In game three, Coastal used an early seven-point run sparked by freshman Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) to power its way to a game three victory. As the Lady Chants trailed 12-9, Russell had a kill that started the run and eventually led to a 16-12 Coastal advantage. The run allowed the Lady Chants to lead for the remainder of the game as Charleston Southern was only able to pull within three points on one occasion.
Most of game four proved to be a battle between Coastal and Charleston Southern. After the Lady Buccaneers pulled to within two points late in the game, Kimes had a kill that started a four-point run and resulted in a 29-23 Coastal lead. A kill by Bickford sealed the match and the win.
Four Lady Chants reached double-digits in kills with Kimes having a match-high of 21. Kimes also added 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had 55 assists and four aces. Pollard added 21 digs. As a team, Coastal tied its season-best for aces with 15 as Kimes and Tracey paced the Lady Chants with five and four aces, respectively.
Renae Popovich and Amanda Hill each had a double-double for Charleston Southern. Popovich tallied 16 kills and 11 digs. Hill totaled 11 kills and 13 digs.
Next up for the Lady Chants is the Big South Conference Tournament at Liberty Nov. 15-17. Coastal enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed and is scheduled to open the tournament in the 7 p.m. match on Thursday, Nov. 15.
