Junior outside hitter Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary (Ole Miss)) and freshman middle blocker/outside hitter Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) were honored as the Choice Hotels Big South Volleyball Player of the Week and the New Balance Freshman of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Nov. 7, the Big South Conference announced today ( Nov. 8).
Both players had outstanding performances as Coastal won both its matches this past week to move into a tie with Birmingham-Southern for second place in conference play.
In the 3-0 sweep over Radford, Jensen tallied match-highs of 14 kills, an average of 5.29 per game, and 13 digs with a .323 hitting percentage. In the same match, Thompson had a tremendous performance with a career-best eight kills and an astounding .889 hitting percentage.
In CCUs final match of the week, the Lady Chanticleers defeated Liberty 3-1. Jensen again led the way with a match-high of 23 kills, an average of 4.42 kills per game, and a team-high 18 digs. It was Jensens third 20- kill match in the last five contests. Thompson had her second consecutive solid performance with five kills.
Jensen has now recorded a league high 21 double-doubles this season. For the week, Jensen tallied 37 kills and 31 digs and Thompson had .400 hitting percentage and averaged 0.83 blocks per game.
Jensen and Thompson are the second and third volleyball players to be honored by the Big South Conference this season. Setter Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) captured Player of the Week honors twice this season, for the weeks of Sept. 20 and Oct. 11.
Coastal will have a home game against Charleston Southern on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.before starting the Big South Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov.16 at 7 p.m., at Kimbel Arena with the opponent to be determined.
