Junior Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary (Ole Miss)) tallied a double-double with a game-high 17 kills and 11 digs as Coastal Carolina (16-8, 6-4 BSC) volleyball swept Georgia State (30-19, 30-25, 30-18) on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta, Ga. It was a historic win for Coastal as it was the 100th career win for Head Coach Kristen Bauer, who is only the second coach in CCU volleyball history to reach the mark.
Coastal took control of game one early by jumping out to 10-5 lead on a kill by Jensen. Georgia State would fight back to get to within one at 17-16. But Coastal would rally and put the first game away, on consecutive kills by sophomore Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother Mercy) and Jensen for a game one 30-19 victory.
Game two was a close game throughout with 13 tie games before either team could reach 20 points. CCU was able to take the lead for good at 21-20 on a kill by sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley). A kill by Obert would seal the deal as the Lady Chanticleers won game two 30-25.
The third game was all CCU from the beginning, as it jumped out to a 12-6 lead on an attack error by Georgia State. The attack errors would be a reoccuring theme for Georgia State as it hit -.044 for the third match. Consecutive service aces by junior Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) would allow Coastal to go up by more than ten points at 25-14. Kills by Jensen and junior Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) on consecutive plays would finish the game, 30-18, and give CCU the match victory.
Besides Jensens 17 kills, Kimble also reach double figures with 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Obert also played well with eight kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Three Lady Chants reached double figures in kills led by sophomore Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills), who had a game-high 14. Setter Hampton led both team with 33 assists.
The Lady Chanticleers outhit Georgia State 51-27 with a hitting percentage of .270.
This was the 10th three-game sweep for Coastal this season and the fifth sweep it registered in its last eight games.
Coach Bauer, in only her fifth season, with the victory joined former Chants coach Tammi McCaudy-Lee as the only two volleyball coach to record 100 career victories at Coastal.
CCU will continue the road trip as it travels to Birmingham, Alabama to take on conference rival Birmingham-Southern in a match at 1 p.m.
