Volleyball Sweeps Weekly Big South Awards

CONWAY, S.C.– The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team swept the weekly Big South honors for the week ending Oct. 27, the conference office announced. Sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) has been selected as the Choice Hotels Big South Player of the Week, while freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) earned New Balance Freshman of the Week honors.

Hampton was instrumental both on offense and defense in helping Coastal go 2-1 on the week. The sophomore averaged 13.23 assists per game and had 50 or more assists in all three matches, including a season-high 63 against Winthrop. The 63 assists were the most in a four-game match in the Big South this season. Hampton also tallied 3.38 digs per game, including 20 in a 3-1 win over Big South opponent Winthrop. Against College of Charleston, Hampton had 59 assists, 16 digs, five kills and three aces. She had 50 assists, eight digs, three blocks and two aces against UCF.

Meyers had a double-double in all three matches this past weekend. She had 10 kills and a season high 18 digs versus College of Charleston. She then hit .250 with 11 kills and 10 digs against UCF. She wrapped up the week with 12 kills and 16 digs in the win over Big South foe Winthrop.

The two join sophomore Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) as recipients of the weekly award. Jensen received Big South Player of the Week Sept. 30.

Coastal Carolina (14-9, 5-2 Big South), fresh off a 2-1 week with wins over UCF and Winthrop, face the University of North Carolina at Asheville Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. The game will also be Senior Recognition Night in Kimbel Arena.
