CLINTON, S.C. -- Junior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) became the ninth player in Coastal history to reach 1,000 digs on Friday night as Coastal Carolina (12-14) lost to Presbyterian (17-11) 3-1 at the Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C. Game scores were 30-25, 28-30, 22-30, 24-30.
Starbuck entered the match with 990 digs. She recorded her 1,000th dig during game two and went on to tally a match-high 24 digs against the Blue Hose to push her career total to 1,014.
With game one knotted at 14-all, Coastal used a 5-1 run to builed a 19-15 lead. Presbyterian eventually pulled to within two off a Coastal attack error, but freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) sparked a three-point Lady Chanticleer run that gave Coastal a 25-20 lead. Coastal closed out the game with another three-point run, which included kills by sophomore Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and freshman Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) and a solo block by senior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington).
Coastal saw a four-point lead disappear midway through game two as the Blue Hose had a five-point run that gave them a 19-18 lead. Coastal and Presbyterian battled for control as a Thompson kill gave Coastal the 21-20 advantage. However, a kill by Amanda Kettles started a four-point run for Presbyterian, who then took a 24-21 lead. The Lady Chants continued to battle back with a kill from Nyhof starting a late three-point run that made it a 28-27 game still in favor of the Blue Hose. Alhough Presbyterian took a 29-27 advantage on the next point, Nyhof pulled Coastal to within one again. However a kill from Kelsey McKee allowed Presbyterian to win the game.
Game three started out as another close battle, but Presbyterian pulled away with two four-point runs midway through the game. Meanwhile, the Blue Hose controlled most of game four, opening the game with a five-point run. Coastal had to catch-up to the Blue Hose for the remainder of the match and eventually cut an eight-point defiicit down to four, the closest Coastal could get.
Nyhof had a team-high 17 kills. Bickford hit a team-best .550, making 11 kills on 20 total attacks and recording no attacking errors for the fourth time this season. Sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) put up 54 assists.
McKee powered the Blue Hose with 19 kills and a .515 hitting percentage.
Coastal continues play on the road on Saturday afternoon when the Lady Chants visit UNC Asheville. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m., at the Justice Center.
