CONWAY, S.C. The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (13-9) ended its two-game losing streak in a big way Oct. 25, by defeating 2002 NCAA Tournament participant University of Central Florida (15-5) 3-1 in Conway, S.C. The Lady Chants fell in the first game 21-30, but then went on a tear to win 30-22, 30-17 and 30-27.
In game one, UCF outkilled Coastal 16-8 as the Lady Chants hit .088. Tanya Jarvis had five kills for the Golden Knights in the first game. Game two started the Coastal comeback as the Lady Chants hit .361 in the second game and senior Sarah Bennett (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) had five kills in the 30-22 win.
Game three was mostly in Coastals favor as the Lady Chants hit .342, while UCF had a -.027 hitting percentage in the 30-17 win. Sophomores Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, B.C./Sentinel Secondary) each had five kills and freshman Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) had five digs in the third game. Game four was tighter, with 12 ties and eight lead changes, but Coastal ended the match on a kill from sophomore Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro). The Lady Chants hit .286 in the fourth and final game and Jensen came up with seven kills.
Jensen led the Lady Chants with 20 kills and 16 digs. It was her 16th double-double of the season and ninth in a row. Meyers and Kimble added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Kimble also had four blocks. Freshman Ashley Schieble (Westerville, Ohio/North) tallied a career high in kills with seven. Freshman libero Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) also added 14 digs and Hampton had 50 assists and three block assists.
UCF was led by Jarvis with 19 kills and 12 digs. Setter Jenny Frank added 48 assists.
Coastal Carolina goes back to Big South play Saturday, Oct. 25, against Winthrop University. Match time is at 2 p.m., at Kimbel Arena.
