Volleyball Defeats Radford 3-0
Breaks Seven-Match Big South Losing Streak
CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team swept Big South Conference rival Radford 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Kimbel Arena. The Lady Chanticleers broke a seven -match conference losing streak and put them at 6-19 overall, 2-7 in the Big South. Radford fell to 7-14, 3-5 on the season. The game scores were 30-25, 32-30, 30-28.
Coastal came out firing in game one hitting .267 on just four errors. The two teams matched each other point-for-point until two Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) kills and two Lady Highlander attack errors forced Radford to take a timeout at 24-21. Coastal then got kills from Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills), Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and two kills from Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) to put Coastal ahead 29-25. Thompson then served an ace to seal the deal for Coastal, 30-25. Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) scooped up nine digs while Thompson had six kills in the victory. Radford was led by Lindsey Poole who had four kills.
Game two was much closer having 11 ties and four lead changes but the Lady Chanticleers squeezed by to get the victory 32-30. Coastal jumped out to an early lead 9-2 before Lauren Clary served three straight points to pull within three. Radford then went on a 7-4 run to tie the game at 13 apiece. The serving arm of Rachel Newton then got kills from Lexi Miller, Clary and Josie Hanners to pull ahead 18-16. The score remained tied until a kill from Melinda Clelland and a Lady Chanticleer attack error put the Lady Highlanders back ahead 26-25. After a Coastal timeout, Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy), Rinne and Tracey had three big kills to tie the score at 28 apiece. Coastal then took advantage of three Radford errors and a kill from senior Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) to get the win. Coastal had a .218 hitting percentage on 16 kills having just four errors again in game two. Scheible and Nyhof led the offense having 5 and 4 kills respectively. Radford was led by Clelland who had five kills.
Game three was another close one having 13 tie scores and five lead changes. Radford came out with the early lead 7-5 before kills from Scheible, Nyhof and Thompson helped Coastal tie the game at 10 apiece. The two teams then matched each other point-for-point until a Radford service error and two attack errors put the Lady Chanticleers ahead 22-19. Coastal then got kills from Thompson, Rinne, Scheible, Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) and Nyhof to win the game 30-28. Coastal was led by Nyhof who had six kills and Thompson who had four. As a team, they hit .245 on six errors. Radford had a .156 hitting percentage on 16 kills and was led by Poole who had four kills.
Thompson ended the afternoon with 11 kills and 10 digs picking up her 10th double-double on the season. Nyhof also had double-digit in kills putting down 14. Scheible ended with a strong performance having eight kills and a .318 hitting percentage. As a team, Coastal hit for .242 on 14 errors with eight total blocks. Radford was led by Lexi Miller and Poole who had 10 kills apiece. Two Radford players had double digits in digs, Rachel Newton who had 24 digs and Clary who scooped up 11. Clelland and Clary also had strong offensive performances having nine and eight kills, respectively. As a team, Radford had a .139 hitting percentage with 28 errors and had three total blocks.
Radford returns to action on Oct. 28 as they host UNC Asheville at 4 p.m. Coastal hits the road this weekend for their last away series of the weekend. They first head to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on first place Winthrop on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and then head to High Point Oct. 29. That match is set for 2 p.m.
