Volleyball Falls to Liberty in Four Games, 3-1

Loses Seventh Straight Big South Match

CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team fell to 5-19 on the season, 1-7 in the Big South after losing to conference foe Liberty University who improved to 7-13 overall, 5-3 in the Big South. The game scores were 26-30, 30-25, 24-30, 20-30.

Both teams matched each other point-for-point in game one having four lead changes and seven ties throughout the game. The score was tied 16 apiece until Mary Alice Pike served for four straight points, getting a kill from Alysson Sanders and Rachel Denton and two Coastal errors. Coastal responded with a kill from Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) and Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and got some help from the Lady Flames who had four errors but couldn't regain the lead. The Lady Flames took game one, 30-26. They were led by Sanders who had four kills and Kallie Corbin who had seven digs. Coastal hit .234 to Liberty's .111 and was led by Nyhof who had five kills and Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./JR Tucker) who had nine digs.

Much like game one, each point was answered for both teams, this game having 16 total ties and six lead changes. Coastal fell behind 13-11 before a kill from both Nyhof and Scheible and a Liberty error changed the pace of the game. After a Liberty timeout, Kendall Nichols and Autum Black had two big kills to tie the game at 18 apiece until Nyhof had two back-to-back kills putting the Lady Chants ahead at 23-20. They went on to defeat the Lady Flames 30-25. Liberty hit for .061 while Coastal hit for .257. The Lady Chanticleers were led by senior Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) who had five kills.

Game three was controlled by Liberty who got the win, 30-24. The Lady Flames jumped out to an early 14-8 lead off of three kills from Stephanie Stow and two from Black. Coastal pulled within three but never took the lead ending with a .082 hitting percentage on eight errors. Black ended the game with five kills for Liberty. Game three was the only game in the match that Coastal did not have a service error. They were led by Rinne who had four kills and Starbuck who had nine digs.

Nichols and Sanders teamed up for three kills apiece in Liberty's game four victory over Coastal, 30-20. Liberty took the early lead 15-5 and never looked back. The Lady Chanticleers had 13 errors in the game and hit in the negatives. Nyhof was the only positive hitter for Coastal having four kills and hitting .444. Liberty hit .159 on six errors.

The Lady Flames were led by Sanders who had a double-double on the night. She ended with 11 kills and 13 digs. Black put down 12 kills while Stow also ended the night with 11. Four other Liberty players had double digits in digs on the night. Lara Barolomeo had 22 digs, Kallie Corbin scooped up 18, Pike had 13 digs and Nichols ended with 12. The Flames hit .139 on 28 errors.

Rinne ended the night with a double-double having 13 kills and 14 digs. Nyhof also had a strong performance with 15 kills and nine digs and was responsible for 16 points. Scheible ended the night with seven kills. Sophomore Starbuck had 25 digs in her first full match back from a foot injury. The Lady Chanticleers ended the night with a .097 hitting percentage on 33 errors.

Liberty returns to action tomorrow night when they take on the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern at 6 p.m. The Lady Chanticleers host Radford University as they look to pick up their second win of the conference. That match is set to start at 2 p.m.
