Outside Hitter Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary (Ole Miss)) led the strong effort with a match-high 15 kills and team-high 15 digs as the red-hot Coastal Carolina volleyball team (13-7, 4-3 Big South) swept an opponent for the third time in four matches, in a non-conference contest with Western Carolina (8-11)(30-17, 30-23, 30-28), 3-0, at the Ramsey Activity Center on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17.
CCU took control early in all the games and only in the last game did it allow the Catamounts to catch-up, but the early lead held in all games, as CCU swept its third match in its last four contests. The Lady Chanticleers have now won four in a row and six out its last seven. In that period of time the Lady Chants have recorded four three-match sweeps (Radford, Birmingham-Southern, UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina). This is the best streak the Lady Chants have had since Sept. 20-Sept. 27 2003 when it swept five matches in a row.
Other standouts, besides Jensen, include sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who had 14 kills and only one hitting error for a .481 hitting percentage for the matches. Sophomore Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother Mercy) concluded her strong week with eight kills. Junior Kali Banghart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) also reached double figures with 10 digs. The current Big South Player of the Week, Jennifer Hampton (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) had a match-high 34 assists.
For the match the Lady Chanticleers outhit the Catamounts 45-37 in kills and .256 to .091 in hitting percentage. The Catamount had a poor hitting day with 26 attack errors as compared to 15 for Coastal.
CCU will not have any midweek games as it prepares for its home-match against conference rival and the current front runner in the Big South Conference, Winthrop University, on Friday, Oct.22, at 7 p.m at Kimbel Arena.
