Three Chants Claim Conference Honors
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Coastal Carolina nearly swept the Sun Belt Conference weekly volleyball awards as the league named Leah Hardeman the Offensive Player of the Week, Sara Boothe the Setter of the Week and Sydney Alvis the Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.
The trio led Coastal Carolina to a 2-0 week with a pair of wins against Appalachian State on Friday and Sunday.
Hardeman averaged 6.11 kills per set with a .341 hitting percentage over the two matches. Both matches featured double-doubles – her 12th and 13th of the season – with 30 kills and 12 digs in the first match, and 25 kills and 15 digs in the second. The senior outside hitter has now surpassed 20 kills in five matches this season, including each of the last three, and has recorded 30 or more kills twice. This marks Hardeman’s fourth Offensive Player of the Week award this season.
Boothe is earning her first Sun Belt weekly award after averaging 10.78 assists per set in the pair of victories. The junior from Lincoln, Neb., dished out 46 assists in Friday’s match, and followed with 51 assists on Sunday. She also had double-doubles in both matches, adding 19 and 14 digs, and ranked second on the team in digs per set with 3.67.
Leading the Chants with 6.11 digs per set was Alvis, who is also earning her first Sun Belt weekly award. The junior had 26 digs in the first win against App and 29 in the second, and helped limit the Mountaineers to a combined .234 hitting percentage over the two matches.
The pair of wins this past weekend improved Coastal to 10-7 overall and 7-1 in the Sun Belt, placing the Chants second in the East Division behind 13-5, 8-0 South Alabama. The Jaguars are the only remaining unbeaten team in conference play.
Coastal will look to extend its current four-match winning streak this weekend with matches at ULM on Friday and Louisiana on Saturday.
