Volleyball Falls to UNC Asheville in Four Games
ASHEVILLE, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina volleyball team (5-17, 1-5) fell to UNC Asheville (7-13, 5-1) in four games Oct. 13 in Asheville, N.C. Game scores were 30-17, 29-31, 30-21 and 30-16.
UNC Asheville came out firing in game one, getting the early lead 10-5 taking advantage of four Coastal errors. The Lady Chanticleers answered back with four straight points off of kills from junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) and freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and two Asheville errors. However, the Lady Chanticleers couldn't stop the strong arm of UNCA All-American Elif Unlu who had five kills in the opening game. The Lady Bulldogs took the game 30-17 capitalizing off of 11 Coastal errors.
The Lady Chanticleers came out with a vengeance in game two, winning the contest 31-29. Throughout the game there were 13 ties and six lead changes. The Lady Bulldogs started to pull away, 22-17, off of kills from Lauren Flicker and Emily Palma. After a Coastal Carolina timeout, the Lady Chanticleers scored three unanswered points off of solid serves from freshman libero Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central). However, UNC Asheville tied the contest at 29 apiece until a blocking error and a big kill from Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) gave Coastal the victory.
In game three, Asheville trailed 3-0 before running off of 11 straight points giving them an 11-3 lead. Coastal crept back to 18-15 but the Lady Bulldogs finished the game on a 12-6 run to win, 30-21. Coastal hurt itself with 15 attack errors in the game, while UNC Asheville's Alysha Greer had six kills.
The Lady Chanticleers matched UNC Asheville point-for-point in game four until the Lady Bulldogs broke away from the 9-9 tie, winning the game 30-17.
UNC Asheville was led by Unlu who had 23 kills and 12 digs on the night. Unlu moved to fourth on the Lady Bulldog career kill list. Greer and Flicker also had double digits in kills having 14 and 11, respectively. Three Lady Bulldogs had double-digit digs, Brooke Holiday (12), Bridget Holiday (12) and Raquel Miotto (25). The Lady Bulldogs had 61 kills on 23 errors with a .242 hitting percentage. They finished the night with 10 total blocks.
Coastal was led by Rinne who had 14 kills and 8 digs in the loss. Nyhof added 10 kills. Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had 41 assists and 14 digs on the night, while Pollard also scooped up 14 balls. As a team, Coastal had 47 kills on 39 errors with a .047 hitting percentage. The Lady Chanticleers finished with six total blocks.
UNC Asheville will host Charleston Southern on Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m. The Lady Chanticleers are back in action Sunday as well when they travel to Birmingham-Southern as they look to get their second Big South Conference win. The match is set for 2 p.m.
